Good old, Spot!

June 5, 2008

Every family has one of the things that just tie you together in ways that people outside the family don’t get. Spot marks the X was one of those for our family. We saw lots of and lots Disney movies over and over again, but Spot Marks the X has a special place in our hearts because it was unlike many of our other favorites (Swiss Family Robinson, The Three Caballeros) this one has never been out on DVD or even in theaters.

When my sister and I talk about this movie we it takes us right back to our house in El Senorial neighborhood. What I can remember of the movie, goes like this: The movie opens with the bank robbing, gang double crossing felon running through the woods in the dark, taking torn pieces of white t-shirt and having his dog smell them before tying it to bags of cash that the he buried hurriedly in the woods. The next thing I remember (not necessarily the next scene in the movie) is a shot of Frisbee flying thru the air and being caught by athletic dogs. Eventually the story goes to a family and young boy who adopt Spot. A beautiful white and black dog with one blue eye and one brown eye. I think it was Spot’s coloring that so appealed to us because we had a favored dog at around this same time period called Gumby that was also fluffy black and white, but died tragically in puppyhood.

Spot is adopted into a loving family contrasting his abusive one with the felon. But then things get complicated when the felon wants his dog back and the boy and friendĀ  race to rescue Spot and keep the money from the felon. Kids and Dog save the day.
